Madrid, July 19, 2018.- Satlink, a Spanish engineering company specialized in satellite telecommunications, has reached a collaboration agreement with the Spanish Mountain Sports and Climbing Federation (FEDME) through which it will provide Thuraya satellite communications terminals XT-Pro to the mountaineering teams of this entity, as well as the associated communications services. The objective of the agreement is to guarantee the safety of the expeditions that these elite athletes develop.
This agreement is in addition to the different initiatives promoted by FEDME to promote the use of satellite telephony in order to reduce to the maximum the risk of incommunication caused by the lack of coverage of land mobile networks in rugged and isolated areas.
According to the colonel and member of the Committee of Security of the FEDME, Alberto Ayora, “the mountaineering does not consist of reaching a goal at all costs”. “The fundamental thing”, -she emphasizes- “is to enjoy planning the objectives, analyze how we have achieved them and be able to communicate it to whomever we want from any point of our adventure: that fun should never be affected by something that can be easily avoided”.
10% of the Spanish territory, in shadow
At present, around 10% of Spanish territory lacks land mobile coverage. It is mainly about isolated and mountainous areas, which in many cases coincide with the locations where hikers, mountaineers, alpinists and climbers develop their activity.
According to Oscar Santidrián, director of Satlink’s land business unit, “satellite telephony is the only technology that guarantees reliable communications anytime and anywhere, which makes it a lifesaver in many locations especially suitable for mountaineering, alpinism and climbing that remain in shadow “.
Given this situation, institutions and organizations related to the practice of these sports have begun to contemplate satellite communications as a decisive element to ensure safety during the development of this type of risk activities.
The Autonomous Community of Aragon has been a pioneer in legislating in this regard with Decree 74/2018, which establishes the regulations for the development of youth leisure activities in this region in the form of camping, colonies and work camps and in the which requires having the necessary technical means to contact the 112 SOS Aragon Emergency Center at all times.
Some federations, such as the Mountain Sports, Climbing and Hiking of Castilla y León (FDMESCYL) and La Madrileña de Montañismo have also reached agreements with the company Satlink to provide its members with access to equipment and satellite communications in advantageous conditions.
